Alice "Dixie" Himes Obituary

Alice J. "Dixie" Himes, 80, of 124 Valley Road, St. Marys, died on Friday, April 20, 2018 at Penn Highlands Elk surrounded by her family following a lengthy illness.

She was born on June 7, 1937, in Philipsburg, a daughter of the late William and Kathryn Jeffers Groll.

On May 22, 1954 in Daguscahonda, she married Leroy "Bucky" Himes, who survives of St. Marys.

Dixie was a lifelong resident of the area and a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she was an active and devoted volunteer.  She enjoyed the church activities such as Bowls of Love, Heart to Heart and Women's Aglow.  She was a strong Christian who had accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior and had a deep dedication to her faith.
Dixie was active in the community and was a proud member of the NRA and the PA Sheriff's Association.  She was a caring wife, mother, and grandmother who filled her days helping her husband with his excavating business as well as her own, Dixie Himes Ceramics.  She will fondly be remembered for the more than 30 years she had her ceramics shop, and she had also enjoyed her work at Pinecrest and Shop N' Save over the years.  She also liked reading, knitting, and camping, but most of all, loved time spent with her family and wanted them to be happy.

In addition to her husband of nearly 64 years, Leroy "Bucky" Himes, she is survived by three daughters, Roxe Anne Challingsworth and her husband James of St. Marys, Jodie Tyger and her husband Doug of Kersey, and Kelly Dippold and her husband Doug of North Carolina, by 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 2 step great-grandchildren, and by one great-great grandchild.  She is also survived by two brothers, William (Roseanne) Groll, Jr. and Michael (Patricia) Groll, both of St. Marys, by four sisters, Patricia Bobenrieth of St. Marys, Kimberly (Thomas) Schloder of St. Marys, Sharon Fox of St. Marys, and Faith Jashurek of Ridgway, as well as by a daughter-in-law, Sue Wendel of St. Marys, her lifelong best friend, Joyce Goodreau of St. Marys, and by numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Kathryn Jeffers Groll and Earl Spears, as well as by a son, Daniel Himes, a son-in-law, Paul Bush, and by two great-grandchildren, Hannah Badeau and AJ Autrey.
