John “Jack” George Herbstritt, 89, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of Rosely Road, St. Marys, died on May 10, 2018 with his family by his side following a lengthy illness.
He was born February 6, 1929, in St. Marys, a son of the late Andrew Merle and Marcella Leithner Herbstritt.
On November 24, 1949 he married Mary Jo Leuschel, who proceeded him in death July 29, 2006.
He enjoyed camping, dancing, and listening to the Polka and was a member of the Polka Booster Club. Jack was an all-around fun loving man. He was employed as a custodian for many years at the St. Marys Area Elementary School where he was loved by students and faculty. All that knew him, loved him and he had an infectious smile and glow.
He is survived by his caregivers, Jackie and Denny Herbstritt, Jr., of St. Marys, a daughter, Christine Burkhouse of St. Marys, by two granddaughters, five great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson. He is also survived by a sister, Helen (Kenny) Salter, a brother, Joe “Buzzy” (Helen) Herbstritt, both of St. Marys, and by his precious dog, Penny.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was proceeded in death by a grandson, James Vollmer and a by a son-in-law, Alan Burkhouse.
A Mass of Christian Burial for John G. Herbstritt will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at 10:00 AM at the St. Marys Church, Church Street, St. Marys, PA with Rev. Peter Augustine Pierjok, OSB, as Celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Marys Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the Lynch-Green Funeral Home on Monday from 4:00-6:00 PM.
