She was born August 11, 1934, to Bertha T. (Schwabenbauer) and Joseph E. Riddle, in St. Marys, PA. She received her education in the local Catholic schools and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1952. She worked at St. Marys Insurance Agency after high school. She married Melvin J. Hoffman of St. Marys on August 5, 1961. The couple moved to the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania and raised three daughters in Bethlehem. The marriage later ended in divorce. She was a member of Notre Dame of Bethlehem Catholic Church since 1961. In midlife Dorothy went to college part-time, first at Northampton Community College and then at Moravian College. She graduated with a BA in psychology in 1985. She was very proud of this accomplishment. She also completed a certificate in gerontology and was employed for several years in that field. In later life she continued to garden and she volunteered with the Miller-Keystone Blood Center and the Zoellner Arts Center at Lehigh University, both in Bethlehem. She enjoyed traveling, and she engaged with many friends and activities at the Allentown Senior Center. She enjoyed genealogy and was an avid pinochle player. She moved to Phoebe Terrace in 2016 and to Miller Personal Care in 2019. She lived with dementia in her later years.
Dorothy is survived by her daughters Elizabeth Hoffman Reed (husband Jeff) of Allentown, Janet Hoffman (Mike Chamas) of Crawford, CO, and Rachel Hoffman (husband Ed Hausknecht) of Annapolis, MD; her siblings Marvin Riddle (wife Helen) of St. Marys, Ellen Hoffmann of Canandaigua, NY, and Gerry Riddle (wife Sue) of St. Marys; her sister-in-law Carol Riddle of Portsmouth, NH; her aunt, Marcy Schwabenbauer, of Spring Hill, FL, as well as two grandchildren, Nathan Reed and Jules Reed, and numerous nieces and nephews.
